The screen shot might not look much different from the last time, but now the boulder flies around the screen at random. Not only that - if it goes off one side of the screen, it will appear on the other side. Pretty amazing stuff eh.
Now all I have to do is get multiple boulders flying, get a land object going (something for it to hit), get lasers blasting, get a scoring system going.....and lots more. Only 3 days left. It's lucky I don't have a lady friend at the minute :-)
You can now click on the screenshot below to see it in action. Don't let it run for too long as it will crash and burn. It is a work in progress.
If you would like to check out the basics of game design, this is a fun little edu-thing. Each lesson goes through a particular game, explaining the thoughts that going into making them and you get to play them as well.
Have fun,

Paisley Boulder Death - Iteration Uno
Since the first post of my 'game a week challenge' I have been checking out Emanuele Feronato's 'Designing the Structure of a Flash Game' articles. They are very cool if you are starting with Flash game design and know a little bit about AS3 (which is where I am at).
I have stolen the code that Emanuele foolishly offered for part 4 of the series as well as a lovely paisley pattern from squidfingers and messed around a bit. By the end of the week I want to try and get a dead basic version of a game I have just been playing on my iPhone called Cosmic Nitro. I reckon I can do even better than EF's final game in the structure series....here. :-)
Tomorrow I will get a version of this you can see. By the end of the week I hope to be able to give you a kind of guide of what I have made so that I can help noobs like myself. Next week I am gonna have to try something in Game Maker as I have to teach a beginner's lesson at the college I teach at in a couple of weeks.
Cheers EF.

A game a week for a year
In this blog I am going to document my attempt to create a game a week for one year. The main systems I will be using, at the start at least, will be GameMaker (because I will be teaching it soon) and Flash CS4 ('cause I like it).
For my first game I am gonna go for a basic shooter. A very basic shooter. I want to learn that basics of creating the structure of a game. There is a guide on how to do this on one of my favourite blogs created by Emanuele Feronato. This is the first in the series.

I reckon I will also begin with one of the patterns emanuele found here.
Since I will be concentrating on getting the basic code structure into place, I will use some of the crazy Cactus design philosophy.
